The United Kingdom and the United States share a language and a lot of history, but
not a sense of scale: the UK fits inside the United States about 39 times over.
The numbers
- United States: 9,468,993 km²
- United Kingdom: 243,280 km²
9,468,993 ÷ 243,280 = 38.9, so about 39 UKs fit inside the USA.
Why the count is honest
The ratio is projection-proof — 39 is 39 on any map. Both countries sit largely at
middle latitudes, so Mercator stretches them by broadly similar amounts and neither
balloons the way the Arctic landmasses do. The surprise here is pure scale: a single
crowded island nation against a country that spans a continent.
