Australia is the only country that is also a continent, and the scale shows: the
entire United Kingdom fits inside it about 32 times over, with most of Australia
left empty desert in between.
The numbers
- Australia: 7,723,177 km²
- United Kingdom: 243,280 km²
7,723,177 ÷ 243,280 = 31.7, so about 32 UKs fit inside Australia.
Why the count is honest
This is a clean area ratio — 32 is 32 on any projection. Australia sits at lower,
southern latitudes where Mercator inflates it relatively little, so unlike the
polar giants its map size is fairly close to the truth. The surprise here is pure
scale, not distortion: a continent-country against a crowded island nation.
