Germany is the most populous country in the European Union and feels substantial on
any map of Europe. Set against Russia, though, it's tiny: Germany fits inside Russia
about 47 times over.
The numbers
- Russia: 16,924,112 km²
- Germany: 357,177 km²
16,924,112 ÷ 357,177 = 47.4, so about 47 Germanys fit inside Russia.
Why the map makes it worse
A count of areas doesn't depend on the projection — 47 is 47 everywhere. But
Mercator stretches Russia's far-northern bulk much harder than it stretches Germany,
so the map already paints Russia as a colossus. The true ratio is even more lopsided
than the inflated picture suggests.
