France fits inside the United States about 15 times over. France is the largest
country in the European Union by area, yet the United States — spanning a continent,
plus Alaska and Hawaii — is fifteen times its size.
The numbers
- United States: 9,468,993 km²
- France: 637,162 km² (including French Guiana)
9,468,993 ÷ 637,162 = 14.9, so about 15 Frances fit inside the USA.
Why the count is honest
The ratio is projection-proof — 15 is 15 on any map. Both countries sit largely at
middle latitudes, so Mercator stretches them by broadly similar amounts and neither
balloons the way the Arctic landmasses do. The surprise here is pure scale: Europe's
biggest nation is a fifteenth of the United States.
